Increasing your protection
Many Internet Security Suites protect your PC from over 75 percent of threats providing you have regularly updated it and looked at the settings, many default settings are for speed or ease of use and not for your best protection.
For better protection you must:
Have the Operating System on a backup CD
Not relay on default settings
Regularly update and patch your Operating System
Regularly update and patch your software
Regularly scan your PC on a file by file basis
Scan every Floppy, CD, DVD, USB and download for viruses, trojans, spy ware, mal ware, root kits and other threats
Change your Internet Browser or at least your browser settings
Change your email client or at least your email settings
Use Image backup, file backup or a combination
So your PC was self build
At least you have an idea of what it is composed of, did you install a new motherboard, hard disk and memory? Did you use an anti static wrist band when adding the memory and hard disk? Second hand used parts put your self build at risk. For example motherboard with old BIOS, infected hard disk and stolen memory that will not let the PC boot into the Operating System correctly.
Microsoft Windows is very vulnerable, by design Linux and Apple Macs less so. If it is slow or under powered Windows PC consider testing it with a Linux live CD.
Some anti virus programs do not correctly install or function on previously infected computers. Do not risk your computer with a free anti virus as this is a false economy that you will deeply regret later.
My PC is fully protected right?
Many people think their PC is fully protected by their anti virus, this is not the case. A misunderstood fact of life, there is not a single anti virus in the word that can give you 100 percent protection.
It is your Firewall, that protects you from Internet threats, your choice of browser setting that protect you while surfing, your choice of email client, your Internet security suite, your patching, your updates, your habits and how vulnerable your PC is to attack.
